57 ford 600 generator options

I am in need of a replacement generator for a 57 600 tractor. Are there any ford cars or trucks the use a similar generator? I would like to keep it as original as possible, but I may need convert to 12v and install an alternator. Thanks Dave

Hi Dave, just food for thought. I fought a charging problem on my '54 NAA for a couple of years. Had the generator rebuilt, went through 3 voltage regulators. Finally gave up and converted to 12 volts. I'm very happy with it now. I think the problem is the voltage regulators being made somewhere have no quality control. They may work for a few hours then quit. Where are you located? My generator is good I think. It passes the motor test, it puts out lots of current under a full field test.

I think it's safe to say that an automotive generator of that era would be similar, but what you have to watch out for is 6 versus 12 volts. I'm not sure exactly when Detroit made the switch (I want to say it was in the 1950s), but they did it earlier than the tractors did. Meaning, a 1957 Ford car would likely be a 12 volt system, whereas a 1957 Ford gas tractor is still 6 volt.

I would tend to agree with that statement. I myself have had a lot of problems with newer voltage regulators as well. I'd much prefer to monkey with an older one and try to adjust it than buy a new one. I'm sticking with a generator on my 6000 restoration project because I want it to be original.

I have several rebuilt 6V Ford tractor generators that will fit your tractor.

Email is open if interested.

GM converted to 12V with the 55 model year.

I believe that Ford did so as well.

1956 Ford auto was the first 12 volt car model. I'm hazy as to if Mercury was the same year also, or 1955.

I don't know about the whole G.M. family, but Cadillac and Oldsmobile were 12 volt in '53. I have an old Motors Manual from the era. I'll have to look up the Ford and Mercury data just for fun.
