Ford 881 Transmission Adjustment

I have an Ford 881 tractor and it works very well. The transmission doesn't work in reverse 1 and a few other gears.
I decided to attempt to adjust the bands the other day and got a little worried. I disengaged the drive as instructed in the manual and then went about adjusting band 1. It took a while to get the adjusting screw and the locking nut to separate as it was painted over. Once free I started to tighten the adjusting screw and it seemed to not tighten as it just kept going in further and further with no resistance. I decided that this may not be a good idea so i backed the screw out to where I thought it was and tightened it back up.
I had some difficulties putting the drive engagement back in but eventually got it. The transmission seems to run the way it has always has so at least I have a functional tractor.

What am I doing wrong with band 1? Should the adjusting screw go in a long way? Maybe it isn't worth adjusting. Any thoughts?

Not much info there to go on . . . but B1 adjustment should not just thread in indefinitely. You may have a dropped strut or a bad band there.

If both reverses "and some other ratios" are gone- that would be mo0re commonly related to a B2, B3 or C1 failure.

Oops! Shoulda read that more clearly. R1, 1, 2, 5, 6 & 9 failed are ORC failure provided this is an original Red transmission. If this is the case and B1 was not applying, you'd have no propulsion at all.

Located in South Dakota. Reverse 2 works fine and 1, 2, 3 work for sure. I'll have to go out and run it through the gears to see what doesn't work and what does work.
