Ford 3600 PTO

Why do I need to idle my tractor way down when engaging the PTO with out grinding. What is the problem and what is the fix?

Could be as simple as a clutch pedal adjustment, could be as major as a clutch replacement to replace a warped PTO disc.

Start by looking in the owner's manual regarding clutch adjustment. Lacking that, try removing a little bit of the free play in the pedal and see if that helps.

I suggest your equipment might last longer if you not dump the clutch at high RPMs on a loaded PTO. I like to get my PTO load turning, then raise the RPMs to operation speed. My 3600 does not grind at all. Do you feel vibration from the bearing?

Faust It appears that you may want to re-read the OP. Retcol, you should alway idle down before trying to engage the PTO, and as Bern said check the pedal free-play and for slack in the linkage.
