4140 Industrial - PS leak at top of column - see pic

Still working on getting the 4140 together and discovered a power steering leak at the top of the column, see picture. I m looking for insight on where to start. The rest of the sheet metal is off and so getting this exposed will be no problem.

Looking at the exploded view, my guess is #3 or #4 or both.

Been you re right. When I disassembled it, the oil seal was intact but looked a little wonky. I went to the local seal store and ordered one, actually two. It seems no one has inventory anymore and so I m three days away from reassembly.

But, I am now concerned that the leak, albeit small, may have pressure behind it - since the system has to hold considerable pressure. That oil seal won t hold much pressure - actually I don t know how all of this works so I m probably worried about nothing. I destroyed the seal removing it but here is what it looks like.

There shouldn't be a lot of back pressure against that seal. If there is, you have some sort of excessive
restriction in the return side of your pump reservoir, like maybe a plugged filter.

I don't know for a fact that the filter is on the return side of the system like it is on the later models,
but if it is, a plugged filter could definitely be the reason for the seal leak.

Hello Joel , I hope you ordered the rest of the seals for the steering box plus the two centering springs in the control valve otherwise you will be right back where you started , leaking again . I have rebuilt dozens of these boxes . Why would you go thru all that restoration work and not disassemble everything to at least inspect and replace seals , gaskets and o-rings at a bare minimum? Did you locate the correct lug nuts for the rear ? Your tractor must be a 64 or 65 because those are the only two years They came installed from the factory . Earlier tractors they would have been over the parts counter replacements . Both my 64 and 65 4140 4x4 s have those lugnuts and thicker wheel centers and my 64 has the 1 5/16 wheel weight studs on it , the only set I have ever seen and I have had over three dozen Heavy Duty Industrials not to mention all of the Light Duty Industrials because they also had the large lug nuts . Never seen them on even 65 AG tractors and I have 5 of them here also . Thanks Tony
