1964 Ford 2000 transmission

Hello. After reading on this forum for answers to a project I will be doing this fall. I have not found anything pertaining to what I'm about to do. I own a 1964 Ford 2000 with a 4 speed transmission. Without live pto. I will be changing the transmission to a 5 speed out of a 851, with out Lpto. My question comes down to the clutch. The 5 speed has a 15 spline input. I do not know what my tractor has and would like to order befor i split it to eliminate some down time. I've seen that it could be a 9 inch 10 spline or a 10 inch 15 spline. And i also found a 9 inch 15 spline. Any way of knowing with out splitting the tractor?

To put x51 trans will have to have flywheel and clutch. Also make shure get 1960 up trans and coupler. I am doing same thing but ended up with older trans so having to use ring gear and pinion out of the one putting trans in. Have to change axle gears over to fine splines so can use existing axles.

I'm not sure if your answer is 100 percent correct. Some of the 2000 use the same clutch as the 851. What I was wanting to know is - how can I identify which clutch my 2000 has without splitting the tractor?

Look at the "single clutch assembly" parts pages for the 841 (which your 4 speed 2000 is basically the same as) and the 851, and for your 2000. The drawing is the same and the part descriptions are the same on all of those pages, so what you are saying is basically true, that the 2000 used some of the the same clutches as the 851 (and some the same as the 841 for that matter).

But read the descriptions closely, especially the multiple lines for part #7 in the drawing, which is the clutch disc itself. Each line is a different part number for a different clutch disc, and they all specifically say either 4 speed or 5 speed in the description. So you cannot use a 4 speed clutch with a 5 speed transmission, and vice-versa. That is what he meant when he said that you need to have the flywheel and clutch from a x51 to match the transmission from the 851, although technically it could be a clutch from a 5 speed 2000 as well.

I go through this every day, with all brands of tractors. I don't understand your problem. Split it, see what you have, order it and put it back together. Sometimes we have 3 or 4 sitting around split. Sometimes we send the old stuff and have it rebuilt. Takes a week or more. If you order the wrong stuff before splitting, it may take longer.
