4500 steering box problem

A friend has a 1968 4500 that he has a problem with.
When.he turns the steering wheel one way the steering wheel rises until it hits a point where it will steer. Then turning the other way the steering wheel lowers back down to where it should be and then will steer in that direction. So to me it seems the worm gear is riding up and not staying put. Maybe a split ring or collar is loose?
Does anyone have a exploded view diagram of this box? It sits on top of the tranny under the instrument panel. Thanks in advance for any info.

Follow up question.
Could the pedestal be taken off and this bearing be replaced without disturbing the lower larger unit?
I suppose one problem might be the pieces of the old bearing and where did they go.

I believe you could, yes. And yes, I'd be concerned about getting all of the loose balls out of the bottom of the unit without a complete disassembly.
