Reverser Trans Question

I recently purchased another 1800 that has a Sherman reverser trans. External shifter linkage is sloppy, it will sometimes pop out of gear, and doesn't always want to go back into gear without turning off the tractor. Are these problems symptoms of the sloppy linkage or a more serious issue? What are some possible fixes? Thanks again!
 
If the external shifter is not hitting anything in the range of its travel, the problem is likely internal to the box, such as worn shift collar teeth and/or excessive end play of the components. If the shifter is bottoming out on something, then you'll need to tighten up the linkage so that it does not.
 
is it the Sherman that is jumping out or the 4 speed trans? What is the series and model of your tractor? Is it a late 1950's early 1960's 4 cylinder 4 speed Tractor? Maybe a 1801/1821 or 1801/1841?
 
It is a late 50s early 60s, 4spd, 1841. It is the reverser that either pops out of gear or won't go back into gear (sometimes) when I'm trying to shift the reverser. With the slop in linkage it is possible the gear lever isn't moving the internal parts far enough forward and backwards. I'll try to get some pictures tonight.
 
Top two pics are with the shifter handle in forward and aft positions. Moving the handle causes the shaft thru the trans to move slightly in/out and front/back. Seems like there should be a grommet in the trans case to keep the shaft centered and eliminate the moving. Last pic is the handle. It can move left/right which makes the shaft going thru trans case move. What I can't show in still pictures is the slop in the pin/oval connection.

I wish I could says it was all the shifter's fault, but it is more than likely the reverser will need a rebuild.

I was scratching my head over your other thread where you called it an "1800D". I Googled "1800D tractor" and the only hits being returned were for a Yanmar tractor.

Your 1841 is part of the 1801 series, which is the Industrial chassis variant of the 801 series. They never made an Industrial variant of the earlier 800 series, so there was no such thing as an 1800 series, nor did they make a diesel engine until the '01 series.
 
Make sure that bolt where it goes into the tranny is tight and stays tight. Any slop you take out helps in the shifting.
