Overheating update

I posted a few days ago about a problem with my 860 overheating. I
had several folks respond with suggestions on things to try. I got a
new radiator cap yesterday but couldn?t get the tractor running.Today
I recharged the battery & still no start. From reading post on this site I
started troubleshooting & found the points were stuck close. Reset
the points & she fired right up. First thing I notice is nothing coming
out of the overflow. Let it run at idle speed for 20 minutes and it?s not
leaking or getting very hot. Still under 180 after 25 minutes. Pulled
cap and water was moving but maintaining water level.
Again thanks to everyone who made suggestions & comments. I
think I?ll do a little mowing later and if it stays cool, I?ll install a new
thermostat and put some antifreeze in it.
Thank you all very much,
Gary

Thanks for the update Gary. BTW, if those points were stuck together, that's caused by pitting due to metal transfer from arcing. You may want to replace the condenser and the points.

Congratulations!! The Bible tells us that "the fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much". despite what most people will say.

You may find the problem comes back after you install the thermostat. Removing the thermostat allows air to escape through the upper radiator house without displacing coolant.

It?s a warm day here , about 90*F. I fired up the tractor and did some
mowing for a little over an hour. The temperature gauge never got
above 195*F. When I parked it I got off & cleaned the brush off the
radiator and the temp dropped to 180*.

Thanks again,
Gary

On the falling out of the recess, years ago I was putting a new stat in a V8 auto and accidentally let it slip out without knowing it. When I torqued it down, the cast aluminum cover shed one of it's ears.....been really careful ever since. Education costs money, however you get it!
