getting my 961 together after my over heating problem . now turning my attention to the alternator. it has a positive red post and a negative black post. I don't have an amp guage. so my question is if I hook up the red lead off the coil. put in a amp guage and hook it up to the black post then continue it to the hot side of start switch will it work or m I missing something.

It's unclear to me what it is you are proposing to do. Hooking up an ammeter to a tractor that's been converted to 12 volts is a bit tricky. But it is quite simple to install a voltmeter, which in my opinion is a better instrument anyway.

Well, a voltmeter will do that. And you don't even need to install a gauge.
Just set your digital multimeter (You don't have a DMM? Buy one.) to DC volts and touch the leads to the battery terminals. If you have around 14 to 15 volts, you're good to go.

Yes, you can check the voltage from the positive battery terminal to ground. Probably around 12.5 to 13 volts with the engine off, then 14 to 15 volts when it's running. If there is no change in the battery voltage when you start the engine, then the alternator is not charging.
You say there are "no wires on the alternator". If, indeed, it has never been wired up then it's not going to be charging the battery.

How about a photo of the alternator showing the posts. I don't trust just going by red and black. I've seen batteries hooked up backwards just because of the color of the battery cables.
What brand alternator? Positive or negative ground? There should be a heavy wire from the output terminal to the ammeter, solenoid or other "direct" to battery voltage location capable of carrying the current.
