It's unclear to me what it is you are proposing to do. Hooking up an ammeter to a tractor that's been converted to 12 volts is a bit tricky. But it is quite simple to install a voltmeter, which in my opinion is a better instrument anyway.

Well, a voltmeter will do that. And you don't even need to install a gauge.

Just set your digital multimeter (You don't have a DMM? Buy one.) to DC volts and touch the leads to the battery terminals. If you have around 14 to 15 volts, you're good to go.

I have a volt meter. there are no wires on the alternator. just a black and red post. do I put the black post wire to the ground and the red wire from the red post to the positive side of the battery just to check it. thanks.

Yes, you can check the voltage from the positive battery terminal to ground. Probably around 12.5 to 13 volts with the engine off, then 14 to 15 volts when it's running. If there is no change in the battery voltage when you start the engine, then the alternator is not charging.

You say there are "no wires on the alternator". If, indeed, it has never been wired up then it's not going to be charging the battery.
