Timing ford 841

Can some please correct my obvious misunderstanding of how to set the initial timing on a ford 841? If I understand it correctly the I&t manual F0-20 indicates that to set the initial timing the marker on the timing port should line up with 24 degree mark on the flywheel and the distrubutor should be adjusted so that the points are just starting to open. When I do this the rotor is pointing to the number 4 post on the distributor indicating it is 180 off. When I rearrange the wires support the 180 off all I get is backfires but putting them in there original configuration does not produce anything. This is a 6 volt pos ground with 841 156609 stamped above the starter.

Rotor pointing at number 1 in the cap, on compression stroke with number one (front) cylinder, timing marks on the flywheel at 4 degrees BTDC, points set at .025 and "just opening" . It should run.

Get out your OEM Owner's Manual as the procedure is listed in it. The CLYMER I & T FO-20 manual also has it detailed. Don't have either? I suggest you invest in both if'N ya wanna be a Ford Tractor owner.

Points were a little tighter than .025 so I corrected that but I must have other problems. this still only produced the occasional backfire, the kind that comes out the carb and not the exhaust.

By setting the points to ?just starting to open?
At 4 degrees BTDC where should I expect to see it actually fire? This seems to be the part I?m confused on. By using this setting I wouldn?t expect it to fire until it reached the 20s on the fly wheel markings. Or am I misunderstanding what you mean by ?just starting to open?.

At the point that the points loose contact the coil will fire. If every thing is exactly as previously described ,it will run
