I know some later Ford diesel blocks need repair sleeves, but my question is on the 6000 242 diesel block. Did they ever have a pinhole porosity problem? Thanks

Not that I'm aware of. It's essentially the same block as the 172 engine, and I don't think I've ever seen or even heard of one of those getting a pinhole.

I have one that has had a hair line crack in it for 25 years. It is just above the dip stick and runs front to back about 1.5 inches long. It looks like an oil stain until the tractor warms up then at half throttle or so you can see the crack flexing. I was told this was not uncommon for these engines. I was told this by a Ford factory rep who worked for Ford in the 50-60s. He told me the blocks couldn't handle the vibration from the diesels that were worked hard. Gas didn't have problems. I have retired mine to helping out in the hay field. Some day I should hunt up a better block. Just hard to do when it starts fine and doesn't use any oil. Just to many projects in front of it and more coming. Now its been pushed back by the 4200. Al

That explains the block weld attempt on one of the 6000 diesel parts tractor blocks I have, just above the dipstick like yours has. Does not appear to be leaking, but I have a better one, I hope..

Back in the '60's and '70's when a lot of 6000 were in use there were quiet a few that the #2 main webbing would crack and it would show a crack just above the dipstick. This was on the C0NN and C3NN blocks and the best fix was to put a C5NN block in its place. It happened to the one I put in the Mercury car so I ordered a new C5NN block to replace it. It never gave a problem after that.
The problem with running it with the crack is the block is flexing in the main bearing area which lets the crankshaft flex or bend and is likely to break the crankshaft. With the one in my Mercury it broke the crankshaft also.
I have seen a couple 172 4-cylinder blocks crack in the center main just like the 6000 do.
