Ford hundred series fuel valve

I know that there are many threads about leaking fuel valves on hundred series tractors, and that the consensus is that new ones will inevitably leak. But what is the issue with those, bad O rings? Would they work as good as the original if right out of the box you changed the O rings?

If this is the valve you're referring to I Drilled mine out for more fuel flow and also doubled up the small O-rings in there. No more leaks. I did have to drill out the stop screw to get the valve apart. See my pics

This was on my 1955 640

There are two styles of fuel valves used on hundred series tractors, screw type as pictured below and lever type.

The screw type can often be repaired if leaking. The lever type is more problematic.

Either type can be replaced without removing sheet metal, or rocker arm cover if the fuel system is OEM. All bets are off if the fuel line has been farmerized.

I was just fixing to post about this problem. I hate to admit the gas I have lost due to these leaking valves and suspected it was the orings in them.
Just put a brand new valve from Tractor Supply on and it started leaking in a few days. Guess I will drill out the stop on an old one the make the fix
below. I think it is orings that are not restent to the gas.

Has anybody had better luck with trying a different material or shape o-ring instead of the standard Buna such as Viton and x or double x profile?

I replaced my oring with nitril about 10 years ago. I started getting a slow drip while closed earlier this summer, but it stopped after a month or so. I bought the screw-type valve when I rebuilt the tractor but heard of the usual leak issues, so I replaced the oring from the get-go.

Makes one wonder what (crap) material is being used in the shutoff valves from the factory if Nitril (Buna-N) is working fine for you for 10 years ............

I just ordered and used these from McMaster Carr, not a leak in sight! These are for the shut off screw, valve to tank is dash number 115.
