Shear bolts

Ford 2000; 3 cyl. diesel; 8/2 trans.....was using my scarifier today to rip up some virgin clay ground and broke the shear pin. It appears to be a 7/16" x 3" grade 2 bolt that I got at AgriSupply. Hit a rock, I think, and it did what it's supposed to do. Is an off the shelf grade 2 bolt satisfactory as a shear pin or should I go to grade 5. Don't want to damage the scarifier or my tractor so thought I'd ask what the forum recommends. Thanks.

I concur with your conclusion - the shear bolt did what it was supposed to when you hit a rock. Many shear
bolts are simply grade 2 bolts, however I have seen some grade 5 bolts used as well. The only way you'd know
for sure is by getting the owner's manual for your implement. If you can't find one, I'd continue to run
with grade 2 bolts.
