2600 Parking brake releases on it's own

2600 3 cyl diesel and if you set the parking brake it will latch but at times it will release on it's own. I took a look at the ratchet mechanism to see what's going on. The pawl is on a shaft and is retained with a clip. It has 3 washers behind it but has a lot of room to slide on the shaft. It looks pretty worn and the teeth look like they are worn at an angle. The teeth on the part of the pedal show some wear.
Should the pawl have that much movement on the shaft? The teeth on the pedal are welded to the pedal so I'm guessing you would have to replace the pedal. The pawl itself is listed but it's $100!!! Anyone had success dressing the teeth on the pawl?

The little bracket bends out of line,
on my 3910 and a few other tractors I
have straightened it out and then
welded a tab to catch a bolt on the
housing and it has been fine ever
since

By bracket do you mean the part the pawl mounts to? Is it supposed to have 3 washers(spacers) behind the pawl? It looks like it could have 3 more washers on the other side as the pawl can slide on it's shaft.

My bracket that holds the pin the pawl pivots on is very short, heavy steel and bolted directly the where the 2 case halves are. No bend or flex in the bracket. The teeth on the pawl and the pedal are worn. I'm going to try to clean up the teeth on the pawl and shim it ver slightly to grab on the non worn teeth on the brake pedal.

I've been following this as I have the same problem (up until an hour ago :) ) with my 4100. Basically it was as Mark said, the bracket with the pivot that the pawl rides on wasn't quite at 90 degrees. It made for a lot of play in the brake rod before engagement, and easy slippage when it managed to engage. So I put a 1/2" deep socket on the pivot with an extension, which gave me the leverage to bend it to where it should be. I also ended up switching the washer that was on the pivot from the inside to the outside. It now works perfectly!

I used my Dremel with a thin cutoff wheel to clean up and sharpen the teeth (3) on the pawl. I added a washer behind the pawl which moved it over a little and it centered better on the pedal's teeth. So far so good, it locks and stays locked now.
