Ford 4500 hydraulic arms

When we bought the 4400 the arms didn't work at all (lift them up by hand and they would drop immediately), would that be caused by the flow control knob broken off (looks like it snapped off) or the whine that I was talking about some posts ago? I don't need them for the backhoe, but was just wondering.

That's normal when touch control lever is down or has not been used in long time. All the flow control does is control how fast arms come up in small increment raises. Does nothing for full raise or lowering.

Thats normal, all your doing is pivoting the shaft and pulling the dog bone away from the piston, dog bone isn't attached to the piston so there's no resistance.
Worked on a 3000 where the owner had lifted the arms up high enough to drop the dog bone out of position, not sure if that would happen on a 4000's lift top.
Usually the control valve under the lift top sticks from setting unused.
