Ford 640 rear axle bearing collar removal

The manual states to remove this collar to drill holes into it and use a chisel to break it.
I remember doing a Ferguson TO-20 rear axles and I used a cutting torch to cut the collar into and it came right off. Why couldn't i do the same on the Ford 640 axle?

Yes it is, but the axle and bearing base is made of a much harder steel than the collar and when I cut the collar the metal just peeled away and didn't hurt the bearing nor the axle.
 
If you're good with a cutting torch, then no problem. The folks who wrote the repair manual assumed that not everyone is proficient with a torch.
 
Actually you can repeatedly drop the end
on a wooden block and it will come off.
Wouldn't have believed it myself but an
old mechanic at a dealership near me did
it on one for Pop years ago.
 
Given how hard those assemblies come apart using a puller, I'd have to see that for myself before I believed it. Stated another way, normal side thrust of the wheels in operation should not be enough to cause the bearing and/or collar to move on the shaft, and pounding the axle on a wood block would not nearly simulate those forces.

I could maybe see your method working on a 3000 with a threaded nut once the nut was removed, but not on a 600 where the press fit of the bearing and the collar are the only thing keeping your wheel from coming off while you're going down the road.
