Uhhh...if this is a 3-cyl motor, you?ve probably got a bad fuel
pump, the diaphragm is bad and it?s leaking gas.

Pump is at the front of the engine, behind the fan. Some folks
are talented & lucky and can reach in there. Me, I had to pull
the nose, radiator, and fan.

If this is a 3-cyl, that?s an updraft carb. Never say never but I
can?t think of another way that gas could get in the crankcase.

BTW, if this is a 3-cyl and my guess is correct:
1. Be very careful removing the steel fuel lines from the pump. The lines were firmly frozen to the brass fittings screwed into the pump and the lines wanted to twist into pretzels rather than break loose from the fittings. No amount of convincing worked. Rebending replacement spaghetti lines was a royal PIA.
2. This is a good time to check your water pump and R&R it if it shows any play and hasn?t been done in your recent past.

Thanks for the observations. Yes, a 3cyl. I was incorrectly ruling out the pump as I had changed it out 2 years ago. It is a PITA to swap. I was able to get to it by removing the generator and then taking my time.

I don't recall where I bought it (I think NH but could be wrong). I had to replace the top seal on the pump soon after I installed it due to leaking. I think they used some gasket material that cannot handle ethanol gas. Betting that there are other seals that have now let go.

I bought a new tank valve. Going to start using it.

At least all your fittings are now easier to get loosened up. No
consolation but I also had a replacement fail - and that one
came from CNH/Fiat. I think I ordered the second one from
here at this site.

I am with you, just ordered one from here also...
