Hey guys my 801 jumps out of reverse and third it has new detents in it. I have found another trans for $400. My question is do I fix my current trans or do I buy this other one? Also what can I check on this other to verify if it?s good or not . Thanks again for your help

There is no way to know without inspection.

That said, many/most vintage Ford 5 speed transmissions will jump out of some gears, usually third and reverse, but sometimes more, under an overhauling load. This is due to wear in the engaging teeth on the respective gears and shifting collars as well as thrust washers, bearings, etc. Only those with extreme wear will jump out for these reasons under a non-overhauling load.

If your tractor jumps out of gears under a non-overhauling load, carefully inspect the shifting mechanism for wear/adjustment. You may get lucky.

Without reliable history, there is no reason to believe that a used transmission will prove to be any better than the one that you already have.

At this stage, I would not buy another unknown transmission unless I was inherently lucky.

I have probably been lucky, but have taken the transmissions apart and made thrust washers to take up endplay, as the original ones are usually too thick, and so far have been successful. But it all depends on the wear pattern

If it was me I'd buy it. Around here parts are getting harder to find every day.

Good advice for one planning to use a vintage Ford with 5 speed for some time, RB.
