How many of the Ford 5000 were made that were the higher standing ones. Most I see are built closer to the ground and some are sitting higher maybe like a JD 4010 OR OLIVER 1600--Hope I explained that good enough....thanks

There aren't any records showing how many of any particular model.
The utility or all-purpose model was more common than the rowcrop. There was also a high cop, which is considerably less common than the utility or rowcrop models. It was basically a utility model with 38" rear tires and the front axle knees/spindles of a rowcrop.

Row crop was the word I was looking for--thank you Fordfarmer. Anything I should look out for in a 5000 row crop when buying?????

They're a good, solid tractor. Same drivetrain as the utility model... but some parts for the hydrostatic power steering system (Saginaw? )are no longer available. My cousin had one that was ok while the oil was cold, but would suddenly do a hard left turn once it was warmed up some. He was lucky enough to find a used "hand pump" (under the steering wheel) that had a different failure than his, and combine them into one good one. I've heard of guys adapting the steering motors from combined.

I was trying to remember the name of the early steering motor... on a 7000... now I believe it was..... Saginaw... this motor was also used on specialized tugs called locomotives used for moving factory parts....as well. Brings back memories from about 35 years ago when I tried rebuilt one with some sucess...... thanks....

I have that Saginaw system here.
It was working fine so I'm not going to open it.
There is a fairly heavy steering column support part on those tractors. Would be pretty easy to weld brackets for a different steering motor into it.
I will do that if ever the need arises.
Don't know the cost but had thought of the hydro motor off a later Ford industrial.
Ken's 545 is hydrostatic and steers effortlessly. Similar pump and flow rate.
Steering motor on that is half the size of a Saginaw.

all were called straddle mount low boys , or flat deck , high boys here .all most all are on 38s with a taller or shorter front spindle high boys also have a different steering column with a tilt wheel . this is on post 68 models non louverd hood never owned the early ones

Steering is the only thing. You can get another steering motor off ebay if you know what you are looking for. I've got a spare for insurance.

Do you have an eye on a particular tractor or are you just looking around? I'm going to sell mine at some point. I'm also probably not going to sell it to someone off Craigslist who's about to trash it either. I like it well enough not to let that happen to it.

I was asking because I just bought one- it is the higher standing one. Straight metal all around-almost new rear tires--steers really well and starts good. Had it delivered for 4600.
