Push rods Ford 3000

1965 Ford 3000 diesel lost compression. Removed valve cover and #2 Exhaust push rod bent and clearance is 1/4" other push rods appear to have slight bend. Is this a tappet or cam problem?

Before you order new ones, be sure to
measure your old ones... they started
using different lifters and shorter
pushrods in mid-'68. Yours should be the
longer ones, but they could have been
changed at some point.
I think I still have a set of the older
style, if you need them.

I have been using the tractor almost everyday. I pulled the rocker
assembly off and the #1 cylinder push rods were also bent # 3
cylinder appear ok. My push rods are 10.5 inches

How does the whole rack look?
Is it getting oil and nothing worn or binding?
I'm thinking nothing below the push rods - lifters/cam - can cause a bent one. So it has to be above.
That leaves the rocker arms or valves are causing undue resistance on the push rods and bending them.
I have a head here and can bounce the valves pretty easily with the heel of my hand - one hand on top of the other. Maybe 60? lbs of pressure.
Just tried it to see.

Finally had a chance to pull the timing cover Cam gear sheared off two bolts holding retaining bracket. found bolt heads and debris in front of oil pan. the cam can slide about 1" front to back . Is this normal? I will attach video and pictures. Thanks for any help you can offer.

I think I will just start C/Ping this
for those of you who don't understand
about the Classic/Modern views on this
board.

"I would guess that more than half of
the members of this board use Classic
view. By now your original post on
Classic is on page 5 or 10 or somesuch
and is unlikely to be seen by Anyone who
reads Classic.
I just happened to see your post because
I clicked on 'todays posts' - something
I don't often do.
I suggest in future if your post is more
than a couple of days old you start a
new thread. A Lot more people will see
it then."

If the admins of this site would decide to use only one view, modern or classic, then we would be able to edit our posts and use other features that are disabled because they insist on making both views available. I guess they don't want to p*$$ anybody off, but in reality they're p*$$ing everybody off to some extent because of the inability to edit our posts.

Valves appear to be working . I can press down and they feel free. Timing cover off and debris in oil pan and the two bolts that secure the cam retainer are sheared off. Is the cam able to move back and forth 1.5 "? All gears appear to be ok. No teeth missing or damaged. I will attach a video and a couple of pictures

I have never been into a 3000 engine that being said some engines use a trust plate to retain the cam some don't Either way the there is some kind of trust plate be it a plate are the back of the cam gear... The cam gear teeth are machined to pull out are in on the cam depending on what thrust they use..

You have a serious issue :(...

Hobo;
If you guys get together on this 3000, and find out what happened with that engine......Post yer findings.
I would like to know what's up, so if it ever happens to my 3000, I'll have a running start on a possible fix.

Lost in a forest of new things ya know???

I've never seen that happen to one of those engines before and I've had a number of them apart.
Was the gear loose on the cam when you took the cover off?
Was the timing key still in the cam?
If the cam quit turning the pistons hitting any open valves would have caused the pushrod damage.
If the cam gear retaining bolt had came loose it would have allowed the cam to move back and forth.
With the corner broke off of one side of the thrust plate it looks like something got caught between the bolts and cam gear.

Ether way you have a significant amount of damage, you'll need to remove the engine in order to remove the hydraulic pump drive gear from the back of the cam before you can remove the cam.
I'd pull the head to check for any bent valves,if the gear was loose on the cam I'd replace both, if not I'd still replace the cam, lifters and push rods with ones for a later model engine.
