Hi everybody . I am new here . My first tractor and I am learning the hard way :) . I just bought a 1971 Ford 5000 with the SOS transmission. I understand that the SOS transmission changed considerably over the years . Engine and Transmission appear to function OK at this point. The power steering does not. Can anyone give me some tips on the good and bad of this machine ? Especially on the SOS transmission of this year or the power steering ? Or at least point me to a good source of info on it. Had lots of fluid coming out the top of steering column. I finally got the rusted on upper steering shaft off of the worm gear. I had to unscrew the worm gear out of the lower part of the gear case to get it to where I could heat it up with torch and pound off upper shaft. Can I just screw the worm gear back in or do I need to disassemble the lower part of this gear box? The power steering did not work besides the bad leak. Could the valve block that sits on that worm gear be leaking too bad that you get no power steering ? Is it better to recon the valve block or just buy a new one? Also I have some rust on the splines that joint the worm gear to that upper shaft. What is the best compound to use to insure that it does not rust up again? Apparently water leaks in the top of these steering columns just below the steering wheel causing this problem. What is the best way to seal this area? Would drilling a drain hole lower in the upper part of that cast housing be a good idea to drain out any water that leaks in ? Or would that cause other problems? Would I be better off just buying a new steering box assembly ? I see them on this website but they are not cheap. (about $1400 ) . Also have a few spots of rust on loader cylinder chrome rod (I think this machine sat for awhile without being run). Can I just use fine emery cloth on it or is there a better way? Any tips on the Freeman 4000 loader would be great as well! Does anybody have any idea what this machine might be worth in my area of the country (Washington State)? THANKS FOR ANY HELP!!!
