Ford 4000 Diesel or 801 Diesel - Need help with ID

Wifes grandfather's tractor, hoping to start restoration soon. Sheetmetal vs serial number has me stumped.

Top numbers appear to be 84_
Bottom numbers appear to be 13890

Cyclones from hood, with missing emblem.

Cant wait to hear what you guys know.

Its a 841 repainted in "new" colors, old dealer trick to sell old model or claim newer when selling as used. In top radiator tank by mfg there will be a date. Will give idea when built.

The diesel air horn box is the earlier one around 1958(the diesel came out with the 601s/801s in 1958) Rear axle is the earlier one before the 4000s came out. The grill is 600,601 or 800 and not the 801 or 4000 style grill. There are also differences with the fuel tanks between the 600?gal, 800?gal, (601/2000-13 gal) and (801/4000-17 gal). But it might be a very early 801. There are casting dates on the engine, axles trumpets and other parts. The engine code will tell if it's a 144(601/2000) or a 172(801/4000) and roughly when it was manufactured. When all the right parts are there, then I feel obligated to keep it right, however when it all mixed up then I feel free to make it whatever I want. Add power steering,Sherman, remote connectors, 12 volt alternator, cab, loader, backhoe, winch, snowblower ... etc! Then I paint it black and put SS 396 all over it. Your looks like it has not been messed with, still has it's generator. Well congrats on the tractor wish you all the best. Personally I think the 801s and the all red 601s were some of the best looking tractor ever build.

Stealth you have very little to worry about. The four cylinder four thousand has only very small differences from the 801. Yours appears to be very close to original except for the paint and the grill. It should be a very straight forward restoration. If you want help with what colors to paint parts, I have a Ford brochure with actual color photographs from 1958.

I am storing one of those for a good
friend of mine so I used it to plow and
disc gardens for my cousins a couple of
weeks ago just to give it some exercise.
This one is an older restoration but is
still mostly correct in appearance.
They are great old tractors.

Since it has a 601 style grill and an 841 model number stamped on the transmission, it is likely that some parts have been replaced from the original, so it could be an 841 with the sheet metal replaced, in which case it would have a 172 ci diesel engine, or it could be a 601 series with the transmission swapped out, in which case it would have a 144 ci diesel engine. Find the raised casting number on the right side of the engine block to figure out which engine it has. Here is the breakdown on the casting codes for the various 1955-1964 engines.

310609 - 172 1958-1959
B9NN-6015C - 134 late 1959 early 1960
B9NN-6015A - 144D late 1959 early 1960

Thank you guys all very much for your comments and quick responses. Personally, I'm excited that it's going back to the "old" paint scheme!

I looked under the hood last night and found more evidence after I posted this thread and received the first response about a repaint.

Tractor has been sitting for about 15 or more years, thankfully in a barn! My father-in-law believes reason for parking was injection pump - I'm sure there's plenty of threads on here for that, so I will do my research - but any quick connections to someone for a rebuild would be much appreciated. I'm planning to do full restoration - certainly can't hurt to rebuild it even if it didn't "need" it.

I will look for engine casting number, and radiator numbers today and post an update. Thanks again for the quick responses - I'm looking forward to tracking progress through this group.

I've done a 48 Cub and 52 JD M - but this will be my first diesel!

My wife's grandfather is 96 now - still strong as a bull - so hoping to get this done for him to witness.

Here's a photo of my 62 model unrestored 801D.
It has SOS trans but should give you and idea of the colors and sticker locations.

Found engine block code - C0NN-6015C
Radiator date code - some numbers over an "L" - then a "4" and "61"
I am thinking that I missed a 1 on the front of what I believe to be the tractor serial number - I think it's 131890 instead of 31890...just really hard to read with the cast washed out.

Have another question on rear tire size - 12-28, 12.4-28 (not really sure what this one means or is), 13.6-28?

The old tire size - 12X28 is now 13.6X28.
You could run 12.4s which is one size smaller but I think they look better with the correct 13.6s

A lot of 801s/901s had 14.9s put on them as the work load increased during the service life.

C0NN-6015C is for a 172 gas engine made from 1960-1964
131890 serial number is for a 61 model
Looks like your tractor is a 61 year model 801 series
