What a difference two days make.
The NAPA ST542 (insulated or external ground type) 12V solenoid worked.
The starter was fine after smoking and to my relief did not continue to run after engine ignition.
The key switch was turned on, and the engine turned over. So, I switched the wire on the S and I small terminals of the solenoid.
Turned the key....no start.
Pushed starter button- motor turned over as everything should.
Thanks to everyone who helped me understand the circuit and how solenoids work (or don't work).
Next step - finding a working C3NN (later version) SOS transmission and learning to split this tractor.
I like the SOS for my work and this tractor. I don't want to give up just yet.
The beers are on me tonight. Thank you.
