4630 Start up problems after rebuild

So I have another thread outlining this build, 97 4630 turbo cyl diesel

But I am having issues now that I got her started.

Could not get her to start at first. I found that the thermostart fuel and electrical were cut off by PO, so fixed it and got it to fire up using the flame thrower.

Well instantly was pouring out white smoke and oil(liquid oil mixed with diesel) as well as smelling like raw diesel and burnt oil.

I know for a fact the timing gears were installed correctly. I know for a fact the rings were installed correctly. All clearances were checked by machine shop and again by myself.

The oil control rings are chrome so I wrote it off as the chrome rings just pass oil until they set. So after running a bit at idle to check things out, loaded her down a bit and took her for a ride.

I am losing like a qt every ten minutes out the exhaust and filling the whole field with smoke. So I shut her down and begin diagnosis.

I pulled turbo and capped the return and send lines. No more oil out of exhaust. Fresh Oil puddled in intake side. So this turbo is passing oil and a lot of it.
This turbo was new as of last year, but was run with a LOT of blow by for a couple months and diesel in oil, I suspect that caused the failure.

[b:5abb94a7a2]Question 1[/b:5abb94a7a2]:
Can the seals be replaced in the turbo? Where can one source these seals? The shaft has almost no play, I hate to buy a new one if not necessary.

That isn't the only problem, As even without turbo on the engine does not fire correctly. It will not fire on cylinder 3 at all and only sometimes on cylinder 1. This was the issue I suspect caused the engine to fail in the first place. I swapped injectors and cracked lines changed timing back and forth through the spectrum yadda yada. If performance changes it is only for the worse, and the problems are always in cyl 3 and 1.

Injectors were rebuilt last summer.
All lines cleaned well.
Compression after build( I only removes 1 injector at a time) is at 300psi at each cylinder only varying about 1-2 psi
I SUSPECT the pump.

[b:5abb94a7a2]Question 2[/b:5abb94a7a2]:
Is this ol Lucas cav rotary pump due for a rebuild??
If pump is rebuilt, will the internal timing be set to line up with the injection pump timing gear stock setting?

[b:5abb94a7a2]Question 3[/b:5abb94a7a2]:
Have I done damage to the new build running it like this? Total run time is approx 1.5 hours including time diagnosing.

ANY suggestions or comments greatly appreciated. The community here at YT is indispensable. Thanks in advance[/b]

This will be of minimal help.

A. Hard to start. Exhaust smells like raw diesel. Won't fire No. 3 and sporatically on No. 1. Compression 300lbs. Need to know compression as 300lbs sounds low to me. Raw diesel in exhaust. You're sure timing is correct???

B. Chrome rings suck but they don't account for that much oil. Over pressurizing the crankcase can damage the turbo, sending engine oil out the exhaust. If that is what happened, then your turbo could be the source of the oil in your exhaust as you believe. I don't know if aftermarket parts are available to reseal it, but hard to believe they aren't.

C. I think you have to absolutely sure your timing is correct. If it is, then your injection pump must have a problem. Pump shop will set timing during rebuild.

D. I'd be worried that chrome rings may not seat. All you can do is put a load on it after you get it running correctly, either by way of a dyno or implement.

Sorry I'm not more help.

I thought compression at first but without rings seated I feel 300 is more than enough to fire. Especially because it was spot on on every cylinder.

Might be worth mentioning that when I started with the thermostart, if I held the thermostart on the misses go away. That tells me it's a fuel issue

Sounds like you're going to have to go through your pump. More $$$ but it's kind of hard to justify rebuilding a motor without doing the radiator, pump, starter and ... . It never ends this $h(t.

Good news for me ( and bad news for my boss) is that he owns it, not me. The pump is off to a rebuilder in Grand Rapids, michigan; diesel injection services inc. They did a good job with our injectors.

Thanks for all your help with this tractor , check. I really appreciate it. I will update once the pump gets back.
