Ford 600/640 rear axle

I have an oil leak into my right rear brakes. I see an inner seal. Is there also and outer seal that you have to pull the bearing off the axle to replace that seal or is the bearing grease sealed. Is there a gasket between the brake backing plate and the axle flange by the shims.

640 has a metal collar that has to
be removed. Not easy. Then replace
bearings and seals. Then collar
back on it was a tough job. I had
to drill and break collar. Then
heat up new one and hope I got it
right before it cooled.

That's what I was afraid of. My manual shows that too. I've had this on older models, it's a pain and you need a press.

I got lucky and an old guy up the
road helped me and had a much
better shop than me. Took a while
to drill the holes in the collar.
Drilled 4 then used a punch to
split it off. Had to have a press
to get bearing off. 5 dollar seal,
10 hours of work.... .

I'm thinking after I pull the axle, looking to see is the oil is coming from the inner seal. If so I'll clean everything up and replace the inner seal and the brake shoes. Since I use this tractor very little I'll take my chances. Hopefully by replacing the inner seal the leak will be stopped.

Maybe could. The 83 year old fellow that helped me said to drill it and bust it .............I just followed directions!
