64 Ford 2000 tractor gear vs hydraulic fluid

Folks got a 1964 Ford 2000 tractor. Currently running 134D hydraulic fluid in trans, hydraulic and diff. Hydraulic and diff show no signs of leaks. However I have a slow leak from trans. I have to add fluid every couple of weeks depending on usage and weather (leaks more during hot months). I ve posted question on leak before as it leaks from the inspection plate on bottom of trans housing. Been told need split tractor/replace seals just not ready to do that. After doing some reading on forum seen folks say to use gear oil 80-90wt in trans (and diff?). Again trans leaks more during hot summers and slower/less in winter months.
Bottom line: can I run gear oil in trans (and diff?) and will that possibly stop/slow trans leak due to heavier weight?

It will probably slow the leak down, but I don't know if it will stop it altogether. If it does ever develop a leak between the hydraulic sump and either of the other two, then you will have to deal with cross contamination at that point. Plus you'll have to keep two different kinds of oil on hand.

Question what kind of gear oil to use? Old
Manual states mild extreme pressure SAE 80wt. A few forums noted using 90wt, 80W-90, 90w-140, and comments of EP 1 vs EP 5? Any/all recommendations on weight/EP rating, brand would
Be appreciated.

80W-90W gear oil is the same as 30 weight motor oil as far as viscosity does.

Combination hydraulic and trans fluid is 20 weight (motor oil viscosity) in standard version and winter-grade is usually 10 weight.

The thinner the oil the more apt it might leak in worn areas.

The trans in my bulldozer has Ford "600 weight" gear oil. I have to wonder what the actual viscosity really is?

in addition, you might try some power steering stop leak as it has additives to help soften up hard seals and make them swell slightly,,, but eventually you need to fix it.

Other have run "lucas hydraulic stop leak" additives which have lots of seal conditioner in it and it will """slow it down"""".

I see lots of the auction folks using it in their worn out syklifts...

ymmv.

I have a 3000 that developed a pretty bad transmission leak last spring(would leave a solid line of oil down the driveway in 3rd). I was using it almost daily so I didn't really have the time to split it and repair the leak so I tried adding some AT205 to it. It took a few weeks to work in but it's to the point now that I haven't had to add any oil since last fall. Might be worth a shot.
