Hi guys I just recently acquired a 801 powermaster it works
great but it does have the all to common jumps out of third
and reverse. I have taken the top off the trans and checked
the shift rail it is tight and I?m the right place. My question is
what all do I need to replace to fix this problem. I know I will
have to split the tractor and dis assemble the trans I am not
afraid of the work as I am a maintenance machinist by trade. I
just don?t want to spend money on things that I don?t need to
thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum! But hold your horses, which you got behind the cart.

There are detent balls and springs that are accessible under 3 plugs on the right side of the transmission. The upper plug should be the one you remove to access the 3/R detent system. Check that out before you go further.

Absolutely check the detents first. It is an easy fix and the parts are readily available. The detents consist of a spring and rounded headed cap. If the spring has lost it strength or the detent is worn down, or both, it will cause the problem. In the event the detents are good, then it will most likely be the coupler for third and reverse which as you know requires a tractor split. No new ones available so you'll have to go to the bone yard. I need to do mine, I have the coupler, but have been putting it off.

I pulled the detent it is definitely shot not round at all anymore looks like a chisel. So I?m gonna start there and see what happens if this don?t fix it I will start digging for a coupler thanks for yalls help.

I just finished this job just a couple months ago. 5-speed was jumping out of third gear. My detents were good; third gear was bad. Reverse was good and coupler was also good. Reverse and third are both available if needed. You may still have a good coupler. Verify condition before replacing.
