New Challenge - starter and switch issue

Installed selector to transmission cover and dash according to manual. Sos cable at 2 3/4?. Selector cable attached with selector on 10. Then mived lever to Park and installed.

Started tractor. Ran it for a few minutes. Heard strange whirring sound. Shut off tractor but starter motor wouldn't shut off. uGGH!

Frantic run to turn key off. Pulled key. Starter motor kept running but not engaged to flywheel. Starter getting hot. Pulled ground wire from button switch. Starter kept whirring away and now really hot. Finally disconnected positive lead from battery. Finally shut off starter motor.

What caused this to happen at this start attempt?
12V. Sudden new challenge. With key now pulled and ground wire at button switch pulled, i touch the lead to positive post and starter engages.

Seens like its grounding somewhere?

Is this a sudden solenoid issue? Or something ekse i cant see.

Interesting, Sean. Seems like it was working fine,
but can they just go randomly bad as in this case?
I?ll go and hunt a new one down and report back.
Thanks.

After you get another one, drill out the rivets on the old one, an see that it is stuck/welded to the on side.

You maybe can clean it, and use it in a pinch again, or for something else. They work good on lawn mowers too.

New solenoid helped but its not the whole enchilada. There is a blue wire from the alternator to the right solenoid post that is getting hot and it melted at a crimp. The push button isn't doing much.

What is new is just turning the key switch and it starts the engine and the starter wont shut off until i now turn off the key switch.

Perplexing.

Thoughts?

Sounds like you have the starter/ignition switch wired incorrectly. Maybe the trigger wire to the solenoid is in the ignition terminal of the switch instead of the starter terminal?
