871 Overrunning Clutch Question

Work continues on my 871. I?ve made Band 1 adjustments, changed the transmission fluid, tuned up the engine with new cap, rotor, oil, gaskets, and plugs. Cleaned the fuel tank and replaced fuel line, and ensured carb is flushed. Replaced rear hydraulic fluid and rear axle fluid. Fixed the traction coupler too.

R1, 1, 2, 5, 6 and 9 operate but they randomly slip out and don't engage while driving the tractor after it is at working operating temperature . Larry NCKS suggested that the overrunning clutch may be faulty.

I have not done pressure tests but i will on this 312259 SOS.

Im fairly confident I can split the tractor. However, i need to know how accessible the ORC is and if parts are available to replace it as described in the manual.

Can someone help me locate an ORC for this. I might be best off finding the newer ORC than the original type. Seems like the manual indicates this.

You can get to the ORC from the rear, but it's about the last thing you'll pull with only a rear split.

As to parts, I don't even see the ORC listed on the NH website and the DDC is mostly discontinued.

Arthur's Tractors in Indiana, PA may be your best recourse.

If you decide to have Arthur's Tractors work on your SOS, please let us know how things work out. Considering options for my 64 DDC SOS.

Copy. Need to check my shallow pocket account. Wondering if i should find a later SOS and have it ahipped to them instead. I am in Northern New Hampshire and Pittstburgh area (just east) is about a 12 hour drive. Maybe I should stat a Go Fund My Tractor donation site.

It was once rather easy to find SOS transmissions at scrap prices (or free), but so many have been scrapped that it is not as easy as it once was.

Still, I'm certain that you could find a DDC unit for rebuild if you are patient.

A DDC unit is a significant upgrade.

Keep us informed.

DDC - Direct Drive Clutch. The earlier S-O-S transmissions had an Over Running Clutch (ORC) whch allowed the tractor to freewheel when going downhill in certain gears, which proved to be dangerous. The early ORC transmissions also had a number of other issues that were resolved and worked out over the first few years of production. When Ford released the DDC transmissions for the '63 2000 & 20000 series rollout they included all of the other fixes as well. At some point they offered owners of earlier tractors with the ORC transmission a free upgrade the DDC transmission which included all of the other fixes. Lots of transmissions were upgraded but some were not, either because the original owners never heard about the progrm or they chose not to avail themselves of the offer.

I don't believe the upgrade to DDC was free. IIRC it cost granddad $600.00 to move up.

I have no first hand knowledge but I have heard from several sources that it was a free upgrade. Is it possible that he bought the upgrade before Ford started the replacement program?

With people being injured due to freewheeling tractors going out of control down hills I would have thought that they would have offered the upgrade for free to avoid the lawsuits. Corporate liability lawsuits were becoming a big thing back then, look at Ralph Nader and the Corvair

You can also look at the carnage that just a replacement of the gas tank could have saved on a Pinto and that was way after the SOS.

They chose law suits over recall.

Ford did a recall on the pinto gas tank issue and it was free

If YT parts doesn't have it, ebay has 1 ⅛ input 1 ⅜ output shaft units.....ensure you pay specific attention to the numbers as old and new are mixed in posted ads...no sorting in groups. Some held in place with a pin and buy one with the pin shown in the ad or make your own out of a ?" grade 5 bolt. Zerks are on opposite sides, removed to insert the pin and then reinstalled and the unit greased, or for more money you can find the one that fits newer shafts with no hole in the tractor's PTO shaft and use the push button attachment device like found on PTO shafts.
