9600 clutch

Nephew's 9600 will not pull itself. Their 2nd cousin was in vo-tech and just did a drive hub and PTO shaft job for them. They say the clutch was new then.

What could have happened for a new clutch to start slipping and very quickly get bad enough not even pull the tractor itse4lf? TIA

Thanks! However, having checked it out, it's nothing to do with an oil leak or clutch adjustment. Something's happened inside the bell housing.

Clutch disk itself could be broken. The center hub
can break, or if it had a button clutch I?ve seen the
disk break between the center and the button.

If the tractor has Dual Power, first thing I'd do is check operating pressures. Those metallic clutches
don't slip just because they get oil on them.

If the DP pressures check out, the next question is, did it stop moving all of a sudden, or did it start to
slip and get progressively worse? If the former, suspect broken clutch hub or stripped input shaft hub.

Hydraulics and PTO still work? I?ve seen the flywheel bolts shear off on those high HP Fords. A 96 won?t have the stronger socket head bolts IIRC.

Remove starter and send a telescoping mirror inside the hole with a flashlight. You should be able to easily
assess the condition of the clutch hub. If that checks out, it's about got to be a stripped input shaft
spline in the front of the transmission. Either failure will require a front split.

Yep! I figure they're looking at a front split. It's like the clutch pedal is all free play. My guess would be pressure plate failure of some kind, but . . .

Might have sheared the pin that fastens the release fork to the cross shaft. The bolt in my 4000 failed a week after I put a clutch in it.

Thought of that, but that shouldn't make the clutch slip to the point it won't move the tractor should it?

I'll let ch'all know what they find when they split it. Don't hold your breath. It may not happen fast.

As for me, I'm betting it's not stripped splines.
