Voltage regulator not holding polarity

I searched the forum and Internet to no avail for an answer.
I have a late '60s - early '70s 2000. When it sits for a few days without running, the voltage regulator loses polarity and the battery will not charge. If I flash the regulator it works fine, generator provides good charge. I'm at a complete loss as to why the regulator looses polarity. Wiring is good, nothing shorting or open anywhere. Works like a charm until it sits for 3-4 days then has to be flashed again.

I wouldn't worry about why it's doing that, just put a new one on. Get a good Echlin brand from NAPA.

The GENERATOR gets polarized/flashed, NOT the voltage regulator. (Even though the act of polarizing may get done at the regulator because connections are there to easily accomplish the task.)

Polarizing the GENERATOR leaves a small residual magnetic field in the generator's field coil polepieces that starts the charging process when the engine is starter and the generator is turning.

It's POSSIBLE contacts in the regulator's field control relay are corroded, and your "flashing" of the GENERATOR is enough to cause them to make contact again, or there may be an issue with the generator, a shorted winding, for example that causes it not to be able to begin charging without having the residual magnetism in it's polepieces restored.

It looks like several different generators were used over the production run of the "2000", both "A" and "B" circuit.

Is your's a gas or a diesel, and do you know if it is a Ford or a Lucas generator?

Bob nailed it... your vr is defective or has a bad contact. You polorize only the generator field and only then when a new genny is installed...

after starting the engine, when the genny power comes up, it should pull in the "cut-out relay" on the vr. Then the little red light goes out and all the magic happens with the romancing...(soft music playing and low lights) and then you have a charged battery.

Thanks Bob. I've worked on all sorts of heavy equipment but this is my first farm tractor.
It's diesel but IDK who made the generator.

Should be... a lucus 22 amp generator,, most common. the replacement regulators can be aftermarket, and most that are made in India, are pretty prone to being bad out of the box. About one in three are bad in my experience, but they dont cost much either.

That includes shipping...

I get them 5 at a time to get 3 or 4 that work.
