860 Gear shift lever and Transmission gear shift shaft

The gear shift lever (NDA 7210) and the Transmission Gear Shift Shaft (ND7212 A) have an enormous amount of
slop between them. The Trans. gear shift shaft actually has a shoulder worn into the bottom of the taper.
The key slot is also worn. I would like to replace the Trans. Gear Shift Shaft. Will it come up and out of
the transmission with the Transmission in tact in the tractor?
OR

Has anyone come up with a fix for this?

I don't think you can get it out without transmission disassembly - see photos -

If it were me, and the transmission doesn't need other work, I'd get a fresh shift lever and use some JB weld - I seldom use such products, but this is a case where it should work pretty well -

No new shift levers available I am told. Wengers has a Trans shift shaft (used).
I thought about using a thicker key and put it on the surface grinder and make it fit the slot. Then maybe
use JB weld. Or try and seat the shift lever lower on the shift shaft.

It is too much slop to let alone. If it was winter splitting the tractor could be an option but not now.
