SOS Shifters

Are the pre and post 1965 shifters the same? I understand the early ones may have the red lines on the dial but are they interchangeable?
How about the cables and tube?
Lastly, how about the pto cable? Will the t handle and cable from an early model fit in a late (65+) model and vice versa?
Thanks

I took an 800 series shifter and upper cable, and installed the guts on a 3000 shifter housing, so some parts are defiantly interchangeable. I may or may not have switched the upper conduit, but cant remember as it was several years ago.

okay Larry,it was a red shifter I bought off ebay,, and YES,, the internals swapped out fine.... I still have the outer housing in the shop...

or like this one
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Ford-901-D-NF-RC-tractor-Original-WORKING-select-o-speed-shifter-shift-SOS-/323764026711

and yes, the pot metal parts also worked to replaced the damaged one on the 3000 where someone took their foot and jammed it, trying to shift it... like this one.

So YES,,,, I use the early model housing parts to fix it the shifter itself where metal tabs were broken and missing on the cones, and used the upper cable as the end was bad on mine, binding the the conduit, and caused the original failure. So YES!!!! you can use parts off the early models.

IIRC the upper cable shares part numbers, but again, its been a couple of years.

I cant remember about the conduit as the early was longer than the 3000 but I have slept since then.

Quit being a pain the the back side!!!!

(quoted from post at 23:49:37 05/25/19) To most people, "800 series" means any 8xx tractor that Ford produced, including the 871 and 881 which were
indeed SOS models.

I don't know about that, Bern! Many of us are smart enough to recognize that there's a difference between the *00 series and the *01 series.

You go into an NH dealership and ask for a grill for a *00 tractor, you're going to get a different part than if you ask for one for a *01 tractor.

Thanks for the info fellas - especially Bill.
As to the 00 vs 01 series;
While I personally try to always call one an 801 or an 800 if that is what they are I understand that not everyone makes that distinction. Some folks don't even know there is a difference. I think if someone says they're working on an 800 SOS most here will know what they're talking about and all is well.
What Will get my dander up is if you call your "800" a Select O Matic but I usually get over that in a day or two. ;)

I'm in the process of changing my 4 cyl. 4000 SOS from PTO cable shift to a shift lever on the side of the transmission housing. I'll try to post pics when finished.

I?m pretty sure if you would go back and read any of my old
post on here they have been nothing but positive and helpful. I
think everyone would agree we can?t say that about your
posts. I respect the fact that you did not like my thoughts on
oil to be used in a Select O Speed. I was passing along info
that I have learned from a man who has studied them inside
and out, rebuilt numerous ones and is a go to for info on them
from people all over the country. Also what I have learned
from my father who was a mechanic at the local Ford dealer
from 1966-1988 where he worked the first few years with a
man I would say is regarded as one of the best Select o
speed mechanics in Missouri and also from what I have
learned from person experience. Between my dad and I we
have 18 Select o Speed tractors some of them we use on
almost a daily basis with no problems.

At least my oil statements are based on 55 years of fact, not blanket statements. I tried to get you to look up the changes in the oil progression and the parallels to the jd oils same time as ford changed theirs, but why waste time with facts. Synthetic hydraulic oils are not needed in older ford tractors. In the 60s and 70s both companies fluids were directly interchangeable in the crossover tables from the past, especially with the wet brakes and pto and dual power systems were being used by ford. And yes both were still compatible when the 303/42/48c whale oil got banned on the next evolution in '74 to '80s while other tractor oils were not. Ford and JD both used less friction modifiers than the others to allow it work correctly. Next you tell me a ford 3000 can only runs on 5w40.

I thought he was referring to me but I guess you have been
into it with Larry on oil too. Like I said I don?t do much on here
anymore mainly because of how he responds to peoples
posts.
