Power steering problems

Hello,I'm back with another problem with
my 1958 841 diesel. I've got it all back
together and have the front end loader and
backhoe working but one of my last
projects on my list was to replace the
power steering pump. Everything went ok
with the replacement but I only have power
assist from center to right. From right
to left, nothing. Center to left, nothing.
From left to right, nothing. Now I also
have replaced both steering cylinders when
I rebuilt the tractor as they where both
leaking. At that time I had somewhat of
power steering. But shortly after that
the pump started leaking bad so I figured
I would replace it to stop the leak and to
get my full power steering back. Does
anyone have any ideas or suggestions on
what I can do to get my full power
steering back? Thanks

If you are CERTAIN you got your steering lines hooked back up to the new cylinders properly then you will want to go into the column.
Probably either a broken spring or two or it's got crud/rust in the plungers and spool.
Replace both the upper and lower seals while you're in there.
Read your manual first to get an idea of what the job entails.
They are pretty simple actually so don't be shy about it.
Check and or replace the 90w in the bottom part of the steering box. Do a thorough job and it will last another 40-50 years.
Those things are bullet proof.

Thanks for the response. Yes I'm certain the lines are hooked up right as when I replaced the cylinders the previous owner had them mixed up and they where fighting each other. As to taking the steering column apart, is there any way to do that without having to take the hood off? Because that means I'll have to take the loader off.

Sorry.
I'm much more familiar with the 3 cyl Fords than the 4 cyl ones and can't say for certain if you have to remove the entire hood or just the dash/gage panels.
Someone here will know.
I do know that the steering wheel has to come off so maybe spray some penetrating oil on the hub and get it soaking while you wait for an answer.

Ugh. That's bad news then. I really dont want to remove the front end loader again to remove the hood. Would there be any damage to the power steering system by just leaving it the way it is for now and take it apart later or is it bad on my new pump and cylinders?

It is possible to remove the dash panel with out removing the hood provided you can stretch or remove wiring etc far enough to get the panel over the steering post. The steering wheel post shield has to be removed to get to your problem.

Ok thanks for your response. That's the news I was hoping for. It is still alot of work but it is better than taking the fel off and the whole hood.

I did mine without removing the hood. Steer wheel comes off and undo your gauge package and wiring and lift it over the top of the column. If you have the bourdon tube temp gauge it should have enough tube to just leave it attached. Put a thin board between the tank and the underside of hood panels so they arent flopping around and unbolt the whole lowerdash assembly from the hood but leave it in place. You have to work around things but I think it's easier than losing the hood and FEL.

Sweet. That's what I'll do then. It should save alot of time not having to remove everything.

Ok thanks everyone for your help so far. Today I was able to remove the part of the steering column that I needed to with only removing the upper and lower dash piece. I got the power steering control valve apart and everything seems ok. All the plungers came right out. All the springs are in good shape. The only thing was in the manual it says to remove the valve(spool) which I did but it would spin in place and rotate but I had to use a hammer to tap it out. There seems to be minor rust on a few of the plungers and part of the valve, what is the best way to clean this up? Also the lower thrust bearing seems to have seen better days. I think I will order new upper and lower ones. I have included a picture of the lower thrust bearing to see what you think. Since nothing was really stuck, is this control valve my power steering problem?

Well I need everyone's help again. I ordered new bearings and seals and cleaned everything up and made sure everything was moving freely and I put it back together and I have the same results, little to no power steering. I took the filter out to make sure I had good flow and that changed nothing. Now I disconnected the cylinders off of the tie rods to verify they're going the right direction again and this time I noticed when I turn right one goes in one goes out like it's supposed to but when I turn left neither of them do anything. So does that mean that control valve is bad?

Well I fixed my lack of power steering. I took apart the control valve and cleaned it up and I still had no power steering. So I went ahead and ordered a new one and now my steering works as it should. Its amazing how well the steering works even with a load in the bucket. The only bad part is that control valve was almost 600 bucks.
