Trying to figure out what the proper RPM's are to get a PTO speed of 540 RPM.
It's 2000 3 cyl. 4 speed diesel with a 2910 engine.
Best I can guess is 1800 RPM.
Does this sound right?

I believe it is 1500 RPM but I'm not near my tractors. It should
be noted on your shift pattern decal.

Mine says 1800 with 6-speed. It's on the shift pattern decal. Those proof meters are notoriously inaccurate. I checked the PTO with a tach and it take more like 1900.

1800 rpm is supposed to get you 540 pto rpm, but it's best to check pto speed with a tach, the dash tach can be off by a few hundred rpm's.
The tach on my 4000 is within 50 rpm's at 540 pto, the tach on my 4000SU shows 2100 at 540 pto.
5600 has the original 6800 hour dash but engine sounded slow at recommended 1800 rpm for 540 pto, checked pto speed with my digital tach, to get 540 pto the dash tach shows 2300 rpm, engine doesn't sound reved out and mower cuts much better.

Makes sense, looking for a better cut.
Just ordered a tach.
Are you checking at the input of the gearbox or PTO output, and is that where 540 is supposed to be?

I check it at the pto output

My Operator's Manual for the 2000/3000/4000/5000 series tractors says the 2000 & 3000 get 540 rpm at the PTO when the engine is at 1800 rpm's for the S-O-S and 6 speed transmission, but it's 1600 rpm for the 8 speed on those models. Unfortunately, mine is a later issue manual and it doesn't even mention the 4 speed.

That's where I'm at now, same manual I guess.
I'll wait till I can check the PTO with the tach I ordered.

I found this in my Service Data Book.

Looks like the 8 spd with trans pto has a different ratio and is the only one that's rated for 1600 engine rpm, all other 3 cylinder model pto's are rated for 1800 engine rpm.

Same manual I was looking at.
With a tach on the way I can nail it, and it'll also give me a chance to check my 640 which I've always run according to the proof meter.

Your right, no mention of the 4 spd trans anywhere.
It does have a section for the SOS trans but doesn't give pto operating rpm for SOS which is 1800 rpm.

I have Luke's owner's manual for the
early 2/3/4/5000's here. The 4 speed only
needs 1500 engine rpm to achieve 540 at
the PTO.

If it's the same tranny as used in the 4 cyl early 60's I'll agree with you as my '63 4 cyl 4 sp, tranny drive PTO makes 540 at around 1500...haven't checked the exact number lately but surely not 1800.

Finally got back to the tractor with a hand held tach.
1500 RPM gave me exactly 540 at the gearbox.
Nice to know since it's not my tractor.
