3000 Diesel

Morning friends. Ever since I got my used 65 3000 diesel and I'm cutting grass it chokes down when I hit big or tuff grass like the governor isn't working. I know it doesn't have a governor like a gas engine so what actually happens when they rev up? Is there something in or on the injector pump that can be fixed replaced or adjusted? I know something should happen as I see other diesel tractors start blowing black smoke when they get into thick stuff so they must be getting more fuel somehow. It's always puzzled me and I know some of you can help me with this. I'm still looking and thinking about a new tractor my wife gave me the go ahead but man it's hard to bite that bullet and get a note with one that's paid for. So if I can make this one run better it may help me decide to keep on keeping on! Thanks.

Assuming it has a inline Sims inj pump, good pumps but I've seen a few with lazy governors, more so with the 4 cylinder 5000 models.
There's a adjustment to make the governor more responsive but I've never messed with it.
Maybe Dieseltech or Al the pump guy will chime in, or you could contact them.

Thanks Destroked. It is a Simms pump. I hope one of them do and tell me what to do. The manuals are ok but don't go into enough detail o some stuff. I figured there had to be something wrong.

Have you changed the oil in the injector pump recently? It should be changed every time you change the engine oil with the same oil that you put in the engine. If the oil level is low or if it's contaminated with too much fuel things can stick inside.

Same here, '71 3000 Simms. Same symptom as yours. Two years of pump oil changes and marvel Mystery oil and such, still no change.
No matter what I get bitten. In researching the 3000 I learned three things: the gas model has Holly carb. issues, also governor issues and the distributor vacuum advance gives trouble. So I get the diesel model to avoid all that. But still get burned. The Simms is 2-3x the cost to fix of the rotary type pump.

It gives itself oil changes! I didn't know it had oil when I got it I assumed that the fuel oiled it. When I realized it was suppose to have oil I drained it and all that came out was some diesel fuel. I know the people that I got it from didn't do it either. But I've been checking and adding oil to it before I use it every time for over 12 years now. It doesn't have any problem except it won't governor up when it hits a load. Leave well enough alone and be thankful?

If you have to add oil, it might be time for a rebuild.
Also, how old are the filter(s) and have you cleaned the screen on the inlet on the bottom of the tank. (wont make good power without adequate fuel)

Injection pump probably needs repairs, mainly the governor weight kit. The flat back plate over time gets grooves worn in it, and the round skate wheels get flat spots worn on them. I'd say 99% of Simms pumps I see in for repair needs the weight kit. That governor design barely works right when new..
