5th gear suddenly grinds 850 ford

While driving in 5th gear at full throttle for 5 miles I suddenly heard a horrible grinding noise. The remaining 4 gears are fine..Any input appreciated. Not sure what to do..I really dont need 5th.. could i simply drain oil and put new in?

Changing oil ain't gonna help. Drain it,
pull the shifter cover and see just how
bad the gears are. You might get by with
some very strong magnets on the bottom to
hold the broken gear teeth you can't get
out but I wouldn't count on it. Probably
just ruin more gears.

After listening more carefully the noise seems to becoming from the rear axle rearward of seat.. could this be an axle bearing? Why does it do it only in 5th gear? Any suggestions appreciated!

The trans. output shaft turns fastest when the trans is in 5th.
