Diesel Pump Sound?

Ford 2000 diesel; 3 cyl.; 8/2 trans.....Yesterday was moving some implements to different location so I could mow where they had been sitting. Moved the harrow then hooked up the landscape rake after turning off the tractor. Got back in the seat and tried to crank the tractor and got a loud whining/clicking sound which sounded like it was coming from the fuel pump. I had pulled the throttle out to stop the engine and forgot to push it back in before trying to crank the tractor. I quickly pushed the throttle back in but the noise continued but was falling off in volume. I cranked the tractor and the engine started and I heard no further weird noises.

Would the noise have been from the pump as I assumed and what would have caused the noise? I'm hoping to hear from the forum that the noise has happened to others and that no damage was done.

Ah...I didn't consider the starter. The sound did have a bit of a whine like an electric motor might have. I operated the tractor a while after it cranked and it seemed to work fine. Haven't tried to crank it since I parked it. Thanks.

Instead of telling us which transmission
you have maybe state which pump? CAV
rotary or Simms inline?
They used both on the 3000s.
Maybe one of the pump guys here has an
idea.

Only the 3000 and 5000 had Simms pumps, and those could have had either a Simms or a CAV. The 3 cylinder 2000 and 4000 models only ever had CAV pumps.

Additional comment... Brother added a bottle opener to the key ring... when ever you tried to start the tractor, it caught up and held the key in the start position... even after the tractor started... I remove the blasted thing,,, he put it on another tractor and dang if it did the same thing,,,, I removed it and dug a hole and buried the blasted thing.

More than once, I am trying to figure out what that strange noise is, after the tractor is running,, only to find out the starter is still engaged... Did I tell you the part where I am a bit deaf???
