Item 33 in the diagram. Did they have two versions? One where the finger rides in the slot of #29 , another where the finger goes over the outside diameter of item 29 (where the arrow head for 29 ends). If so, which one came later. Which one should be on my 1971 3000.

My 71 3000 is like the drawing, the slot is only used for the stop screw. Pretty sure mine is as it came from the factory.

If you read the details for number 33 in the parts listing, you will see that there are several different part numbers listed for #33 for various models and dates of production. The first two part numbers listed are for the all purpose 2000/3000/4000 models for differing date ranges:

86523013 - (prod date) 01-JAN-1965-31-MAY-1969
Control Lever Assy., Except 2300, 2310, 3300, 3310 & 4200, Includes: Lever plus Ref. 33A

C7NN512B - (prod date) 01-JUN-1969
Control Lever Assy., Except 2300, 2310, 3300, 3310 & 4200, Includes: Lever plus Ref. 33A

The "Except 2300, 2310, 3300, 3310 & 4200," part in the description means all models except those models listed. Technically a 3000 general purpose ag chassis model is referred to as a 3100 in the parts listings when differentiating between individual models within the 3000 series. If it isays 3000, then that means all tractors within the 3000 series. Sometimes it will say something like "3000, except 3500, 3550", which means all tractors within the 3000 series except those two particular models.

Your 1971 tractor should have the later handle. I am not sure what the differences are, but the handle retainer (#35) did change on the same date as the handle while the main quadrant (#29) did not change. I would have to go look to be sure, but I believe that my '73 4000, which should be the same as your 1971 3000, has the finger going to the outside of the retainer (#35), not the quadrant (#29).

I just went through the exercise of comparing all the ID numbers on the hood sticker to what is stamped on the tractor.
Only the HYD Lift stamp is a mismatch. Hood sticker is 1A07A, lift cover is stamped 0A20B. Does that mean my lift cover is not original?
This carries the position control lever and quadrant.

And yes they do have quite a few quadrants over the years. I went to a farmers place with a pile of Fords. I think I got to see every permutation of control quadrant and lever, except mine. Went to another place with two 3000's. Same, the longer control lever that goes to the outside is the popular one.

I am OK with the cover being not original- parts is parts. I straightened out the bent quadrant, replaced the friction disk cork and it works good now. They guy with the two 3000's had a bent conical quadrant also.

And thanks guys for the info, I can use the online parts better now.

1A07A is January 2, 1971 and 0A20B is January 20 1970, so both are after the changeover date to the newer style handle and retainer.

I just went and looked, and my memory is not what it used to be. My '73 4000 quadrant handle is as pictured in the parts diagram with the finger to the inside.

I don't know the history of the tractor. Got it on an auction site. My test drive was watching a video.
Care to speculate why the original hyd. lift cover was changed out? Are they prone to fracture?
All the other components (pump, axle, transmission and engine) are original.

The New Holland online parts books don't always give a picture/drawing of each variant of parts.
This is not good for me as I am basically trying to un-booger the machine, what is bent or missing, or hedgehopped.

Could be any number of reasons for the top cover being swapped out. I've never heard of one cracking, but if there was a lot of water in the fluid and it froze then I guess that's a possibility. More likely someone had access to another one and it was easier to swap in a known working top cover than to troubleshoot the one that was on it, like maybe they had two tractors and the engine blew up on one and the hydraulics were having issues on the other and it was easier to swap than to fix it. Or they could have been repairing the top covers of two tractors at the same time and simply switched them by mistake when they reinstalled them.

Took some pictures for the record. This is my tractor and is different from 7 3000's/4000's I have looked at.
