4000 SOS Filter

Son just bought a '70(ish) 4000 gas & wants to drain SOS juice & replace w/new & filter. From what I find the filter is part #309735. One site says Baldwin BT112 is the proper replacement, but the MUCH lower price scares me. Is this the correct filter? Am I right that fluid MUST be 134?
Thanks!!

Had one once but cannot tell you about filter cross reference numbers.

I bought my filter at CNH to avoid questions.

Note: He will also need the gasket for the filter cover, which your CNH dealer will need to order, so why not just order both. The gasket does not come with the filter.

DO NOT use goop.

Come and buy my SOS for a 4000 and I'll
throw in a new filter.

Baldwin BT112 looks to be a spin on filter, If I remember correctly yours should be a cartridge filter in the side of the transmission case, looking it up at Baldwin it looks like you need a "PT23136" which comes with the gasket, also avail through NAPA as a "1569" or at O'reillys as a wix"51569"

Ultradog has it correct a "70(ish) 4000 would be a 3 cylinder. If yours is a 4 cylinder then it would be an early '60's tractor, and the CNH part number for the filter would be C0NN7B155A, which is no longer available from CNH. That number doesn't cross reference to any other brands as far as I know either.

Tony Jacobs commissioned with a filter manufacturer to have a batch of them made a few years ago and they were available from Dennis Carpenter, but I just looked and they are no longer available on his web site.

I then Googled the part number and Steiners and Walts both claim to have them in stock. This site doesn't let me post the links because they consider them competitors. Just do a Google search on the part number, C0NN7B155A, and Steiners will be the first hit returned and Walt's is a few below that. Steiners has it for $3295 and Walts hs them for $26.50, but I didn't check on shipping costs at either site, so if you want the lowest total you will have to do that yourself.

JoeM - The filter is inside the transmission. The pickup screen is on the left side at the bottom, and is where you drain the oil, and the screen is made to be cleaned and reused. Also, what CNH part number did you use to cross reference to a Baldwin PT23136? I put in the CNH part number C0NN7B155A into their cross reference system and it couldn't find anything.

Lynn - Not sure why the post I just made is only showing up in classic view, but if you are in modern view, switch to classic view to see my response.

Basically the part number that you posted is for a 3 cylinder 4000 S-O-S. If your son's is a 4 cylinder, then the part number is C0NN7B155A, which is no longer available from CNH. That number doesn't cross reference to any other brands as far as I know either. See my post in classic view for hints on where to find it.

SOS filters for early 4 cylinder tractors are again available from DC and others.

A decent CNH dealer that wanted to get one for you could.

Sean, I looked the filter up on the WIX filter site first (theirs works better than most) then took that number to Baldwins site since that seemed to be the OP's filter of choice

Don't guess with the fluid, it is 134, and or the modern equivalent. I just picked up some 134G from CNH, definitely pricey, but as long as you match the specification with an as-equal, will be fine. Put the wrong fluid in one of these, is a costly mistake.

Correction, the oil I picked up was "Multi G 134", which was replaced by Ambra "MasterTran UltraTraction" They had both in stock, so apparently Multi G 134 is still available. Pricey, but catastrophic failure does not compare. I'm not too familiar with as-equals, so I just play it safe with my 4630 and 555C.
