What is the procedure to remove and replace the front axle bushing 2N3039 on a 860 ford tractor

The bushing is hard, so hand tools usually do not work if the bushing is tight and not badly worn.

I use a die grinder to grind a weak slot.

Tom,

Good idea to use a screwdriver to remove the old bushing. How do You install the new bushing? I do not have a set of bushing drivers.

Chris

I've never had trouble driving one in after thoroughly cleaning the axle bore.

IIRC, I drove it in with the new axle pin to prevent uneven forces and resulting damage to the bushing.

Just install the flanged pin and drive on the flange with a suitable block to prevent damage to the new pin.

Dean,
Pin I have doesn?t have a flange. I am aware of pins such as us d on my ford jubilee have a flange. I?m helping a friend will h his 860
I think the next issue will be the tractor hydraulic system
His tractor has the hydraulic pump right side of the
engine. His 3 point will not lift his 5 foot mower
I installed chains to hold his 3 point in proper position
with his 5 foot mower

catalina0029,
Wish I had a lathe. Even if I had one would not have
your lathe skills. How did you acquire lathe skills?
Chris

I went to trade school for three years to be a machinist. That was a lot of years ago. I think the best skill the instructor gave me was how to sharpen a drill by hand.
I bought a 1942 South Bend belt drive lathe just like the one I ran in school. Built a phase converter for it. I really enjoy running my lathe.

Catalina,
Congratulations on your south bend lathe--I saw one once. It was run with a flat belt, I think, and had a 220 volt electric motor. My grandfather had a machine shop. All equipment in his shop was run by overhead flat belts, as I remember and belts came down to the drill press ( 3 inch drill press) end mill and lathe. The equipment , used, came from a shop owned by Bob Moran, once mayor of Seattle. He had a shipyard which built the battleship Nebraska in Seattle. Bob Moran moved to Orcas Isand, built Rosario and gave the people Moran State Park. My Grandfather worked for Moran and Bob Moran gave my grandfather the machine tools. Grandfather built a shop. I was too small to use the equipment but used to watch grandfather run the lathe. He mainly made shafts for equipment, and made a lot of propeller shafts for small boat.

Run a bead of weld or 2 inside the bushing. Let cool. Reach in and pull it out. The weld bead wont be pretty because of the brass.

The weld will shrink the bushing. I have a set to do in my shop right now.

Dont burn through.

Zoomezoo,
Sounds like a good plan. I was removing interference fit sleeves in a 248 gas to diesel engine in an IHC TD6. Used an OTC sleeve puller to remove the sleeves. Someone suggested running a bead of weld inside the sleeves but didn't try it
