4600 steering wheel nut

The nut that holds my steering wheel appears to be stripped. It looks to be a 11/16 x20 nut. Tried local ford dealer and they had a nut but it looks like 11/16 x18 .a specialty nut and bolt store was no help. I am wondering if a 5/8 nut and rethread the shaft would be the easy way out.

I thought that was what I was getting at ford.showed them the old nut.on line they list it as 11/16 x 20 may try ordering and see what I get.

The New Holland parts site doesn't list a size or thread pitch for that part. Where are you seeing 11/16-20?

If you order the correct nut from NH, it should fit just fine unless someone has messed around with the threads on the shaft. The difference between 18 and 20 TPI (threads per inch) could just be an optical illusion on your part. I find myself usually with a magnifying glass in my hand while I'm using a thread pitch gauge with fine threads.

I found it on the yesteryear tractor site stated the size there. The nut I got from ford has less threads.if I google a die for 11/16 x 20 it comes back x18 looked at the hardware store this am at metric. still nothing that fine, I don't live near a city with a big tool store, may need to plan a road trip

Are you just taking the word of a web site, or did you measure your old threads yourself? Have you tried the nut from the dealer on the threads on the shaft to see if they fit?

Ford used the same size nut for all steering wheels on 2xxx through 7xxx series tractors from 1965 through at least 1983.

I tried the new ford nut, cross threaded. cleaned the shaft with a small file and tried again . the shaft looks like it has had some work on it. I have a 4400 backhoe and the steering wheels are the same but a way smaller nut. trying to find my caliper and mic the shaft. the wheel slides on and off easily that's why I wanted a tight nut. when I was at the bolt place the guy checked the threads and they were 20 tpi on the old nut.

Try SunCoast Tool on ebay. I can't post the url for some reason. Search for: 11/16-20 Die 5-807-240. I bought one from them last year. The die is adjustable so you can control your clean up pass.

Can't post a link but here's the address.

Thanks , I was able to find a 11/16 x 20 on line , it came today and rethreaded the shaft. NH nut works fine, tight steering wheel. Thanks for the support. Now about the dash wiring.....
