Help a spare part!

I had pulled my lift cover apart on my '63 4000 about 2 1/2-3 months ago. Then I ordered O-rings, built a new motor for my truck, had a accident with our Blazer, and broke the wives back (remember if the wife isn't happy, then no one is) well I got the car fixed, wife is still broke. I need to get the lift cover back together again. I started to reassemeble it, but I have a spring, I can not find where it goes! I did not take the lift cylinder apart. I can not find it in my parts book, or the service manual, or on Messick's online parts.

I have two springs, I know one goes into the detent of the hydraulic lift draw bar position control. But I don't remember where the other goes. Can someone help me out?

I believe the short spring is the detent spring. Not 100% positive.

Thanks, Pat

No, the proportions in that parts drawing are not right. 58 is the large draft spring that is external to the lift cover. I believe they are 3 and 42.

I did not take the position control arm, and the draft control fork assembly apart, I cleaned them that way. so they still have the springs on them.

I have not opened up the lift cylinder, so that spring is not from it.

I was told not to mess with opening up the cylinder, it was to much of a can of worms. I forgot about it. But I believe it should have a look-see inside & cleaned. but I don't want to just replace parts to just place them (O-rings don't count). I will if need be though. What do you think, is it a simple thing to open and clean, and get back together? I mean hell, look at what I've gone through so far with this tractor! lol!

Remember, I haven't removed a bolt that hasn't been holding something that's broke, need's replacing, of fixed yet!

Still need to find where the spring goes!

Thanks, Pat

Has the lift cover been disassembled?

If someone can attach a link for the lift cover section 05A02 there's two springs in the check valve assembly, items 24 and 30.

As for the lift cylinder you need to remove piston # 25 to replace the o-ring and backup ring #'s 29 and 30.

The piston (#25) has been removed, and replaced with new o-ring and backer.

What I'm wondering about is the other pistons & O-rings on the side of the lift cylinder. Parts 1, 4, 5, 6, 7. & parts 11, 13, 21, 22, 23, 24. Should I remove them, and replace the O-rings in them also. I do not want to wreck any thing taking it apart. If I won't, then I'll pull it apart and clean it, and replace the O-rings.

Thanks, Pat

JMOR,

In your picture, I only pulled out the parts up to & including the steel ball. The next part is taped 5/16-24. Can I just thread a stud into it, put a plate & nut on it, and extract it out?

I was told to leave it in, if it would move on the spring inside.

Thanks, Pat

You can, but..............there have been several reports of it breaking behind the threads & apparently true as even the FO-20 manual suggest a method of removing the broken part.. Probably wise to leave it alone unless a very good reason to remove it.

For what it's worth. I recently used JMOR's method of removing the valve seat from my lift cover and it worked quite well.

However, the threads on my valve seat were 3/8-24. Not 5/16-24. If that is a typo please disregard. I suggest you ensure you use the correct size and thread.

NineSixtyOne, It may be, I just grab a fine thread bolt out of the bin, and it thread into it, I was more into if I should pull it or not. I just don't like leaving parts left untouched/cleaned behind. But I also have this guy called Murphy hanging around this tractor, and his law s**k's!

But I still need to find where the extra spring goes!

Thanks, Pat
