5000 rear split

New PTO input shaft came today, should have time to put it in tomorrow. Since I've never done a rear split before, should I put the gasket in dry, or with a little non-hardening Permatex?

The way the old gasket came off, that's what I was kinda thinking, but I figured it was best to ask. I appreciate all the experience and knowledge that's shared here.

Make sure you get the bolts real tight when you reassemble it. If you don't, they sections will actually twist, then tear the gasket. We got a lot of new ones that did it. Became standard procedure to tighten everyone that came through the door.

I like the aerosol Hi Tack for gaskets like that when mating surfaces are clean and flawless. Used on one side it does a nice job of keeping a gasket in place.

There's no way it can twist with the dowels in place - are you sure you are talking about Fords here? I've never seen a Ford tractor come loose at that joint and do what you describe. A person would have to intentionally take the dowels out in order for that to happen.

What new model Ford tractors did you feel it necessary to do that to?
