Ford 850 shift detent plunger removal

Hi All,

I want to check the shift plunger on my Ford 850 as it is popping out of gear. I have removed the cap and spring but I'm unsuccessful removing the plunger. It will spin and slide about a 1/4 inch then hits threads for the cap and will not come out any further, I am missing something? Hoping someone can help, thank you in advance.

Thoroughly clean the bore and work it back and forth. A very strong magnet will help.

Had the same problem w/my 960. Tried before & gave up! After reading Dean & Sound I tried again this morning w/a magnet & with much gentleness it came right out!

Magnet trick worked great. Time to order some new plungers, all of them are just about flat!
