Ford 2000 Diesel Will Not Turn Over

I have 64 Ford 2000 Diesel with the select-o-speed transmission. I was doing some mowing today and when I went to park it I evidently did not get it all the way in park and it took off in reverse so I killed the motor pretty quick. I then put it in park and tried to start it to move it and it will not turn over now. You can here a click when you press the ignition button, but it does not turn over at all. Does anybody have any ideas?

Clicking sound??? that could be the starter solenoid.. I would wonder if the transmission safety switch might be giving you issues. But as always start with the simple things, charge the battery, check the connections, then proceed.. good luck

Robert,

Thanks for the reply. Battery checks ok. When I press the ignition button is it makes one single click. It sounds like the starter starts to turn, but can t. Almost like something is locked up. I tried to put the tractor in neutral and rock it back and forth, but it would not move much. I might try to put it neutral again and pull it forward a bit with my 8N and see if it is stuck in the reverse gear.

Safety switch, ignition switch, or solenoid. Sometimes we (me too) often try to connect the last reason for the shutdown with the new problem. It may be something related to the last shutdown, but don't disregard coincidence also.

Before trying to tow it disconnect the traction disconnect, by your left heal.

(quoted from post at 04:21:04 05/07/19) Select-o-speeds will not move in any gear or neutral without motor running.

Steve, that is what the traction disconnect is for.

might be a bad connection with the safety switch to the solenoid.

to pull the machine, you will have to throw traction disconnect.

try pulling the starter and see if it spins out of the machine using a jump cable for ground.

clean all switch connections.. reinstall.. check her out. starter might have been hung in gear.. might be a bad spot int he
starter depending on brushes and comutator..e tc..

Thanks for all of the advice. I have a lot to learn about this Ford SOS. From what I have read in other posts most people are not a big fan of them.

Most people know almost nothing about them. All they know is what they read on the internet. But that makes it true, right? I have had one for twenty years with no problems. You see, what most people don't know is that the first version had some problems that were corrected on the next version three years later and there was a recall where almost all of them were changed out. I actually saw one of those originals in a fence row two years ago. Did you ever hear about the Farmall 560 rear ends?

I understand what your are saying. You can t always believe what you read. I like the tractor so far. I just don t know a lot about it. I didn t realize that it would not move in neutral if it was not running. I thought that I had messed up the transmission or something.

After some troubleshooting this afternoon, I was able to get it started by placing a screw driver across the coil of the solenoid.

DO NOT try to pull an S-O-S tractor without disengaging the traction disconnect, no matter what position the gear selector is in.

It is not ""stuck in reverse". When the engine is not running and providing power to the transmission input shaft, the transmission is internally locked in Park. If the transmission is somehow keeping the engine from turning then it has a bigger problem than being stuck in reverse.

Is the original Park safety switch in place and wired properly? Is the gear selector truly in the Park position when you are trying to start it?

I would put the traction disconnect in the disconnected position and make sure that the tractor can roll. Then I would leave it that way until you get the starting issue resolved. First thing I would try next is jumping a known good battery directly to the starter.
