6610 start safety switch

My start safety switch has been bypassed (ignition switch wired directly to starter solenoid) but I quite like it as a feature. Taking the floor up (and sticking a pressure washer in there!) reveals this:

I can't seem to grip the rubber to pull it out (don't know how much slack there is underneath it anyway). I assume it's like this:

If I undo the bolts around the plate, does this expose the entire gearbox and would I be into a world of hurt?
 

The wires have been cut off, any extra slack would have the wires tangled in the gears or shift mechanism.
yours has a column shift design that I've never worked with, I'm sure it's not a simple unbolt and lift process.
I wouldn't attempt it without a service manual that I've read thru first.
I have a couple tractors that have that switch bypassed, I make a practice of pushing the clutch down before cranking the engine.
 
I've looked in the manual - sounds straightforward but seeing as I had to drill out a seized clevis pin today and there are multiple pins to remove, it might just have to wait.

I sometimes start the tractor when I'm not sat in it, for operating my logsplitter, for example. It's an odd gear arrangement and although I'm getting used to it, I'd still like the belt and braces of the safety start.

I might crack the cover and see how far down I can reach - might be able to get the wires out
 
That rubber plug only comes out from the bottom. More bad news: taking off that shift cover is not for the
faint of heart. Yes, the entire gearbox will be exposed.

Knew it came out from the bottom. I will stick a meter on the exposed ends to see if it even works. Not essential, tractor works without it
 
Yeah. I thought about it and decided that isn?t a project to try to describe here. At least I am not going to.
 
I recently bought a 3910 and had a problem with the safety start switch; 8 speed, hi-lo. Switch is controlled by the range lever, not the gear shift lever
like on my 000 series tractors....as I recall....just remember just enough to be dangerous. No biggie in pulling the cover, shift levers in N. Leads on the
wires are long enough to connect them to your switch and then put your top cover back and bolt it up.....ensure you use a new cover gasket or do a real
good RTV seal as the tranny splashes a lot of oil on the cover when running.

My replacement switch came with a lock washer (which the OEM didn't have) and I put it on the switch in the wrong place which caused the switch to
ride too high and the steel ball at the bottom of the switch wasn't depressed enough to function correctly when the range selector was moved into a
position that was supposed to depress it and effect the operation...don't remember the exact details like whether depressed closes or breaks the circuit
but if you are replacing the switch too, mount the new one like the old one you are removing....if the 6100 is similar.
 
Wonder if it would be easier to install the clutch switch like on my 7710 with a B serial number and 16/8 transmission (with dual power). The clutch must be FULLY depressed to start.
 
I did mine, not a bad job at all, best to have two people to assemble so shift forks go in right place while other person holds cover.
 
I think I'll leave it for now - other things that need doing first and getting more used to the shift arrangement now (it's the column mounted "Rubik's" box)
