I rebuilt the carburetor on my 4000, 4 cylinder gas.........

it's a Marvel Schebler TSX 813, I put a new shutoff valve on the gas tank, put a new glass sediment bowl on it and put a new rubber fuel line from the gas tank to the carburetor......when I start it up I now have to use a shot or two of starting fluid, an to KEEP it running I have to keep shooting the starting fluid to it, it's like no fuel is getting into the carburetor.....at the very top of the glass sediment bowl there is a bit of an air pocket and, I CAN see a bubble or two ?........any idea why an how to get rid of it ?....also, I pulled fuel cap on the tank to add more gasoline an I got a "whoooosh" like there was a good size vacuum built up,.....I read another thread awhile back, somebody said THEY were having trouble keeping the engine running, like it was starving for fuel, he said there was no vent hole in the gas cap,....same with mine, so I drilled a hole in the very top, ...............thanks in advance for any and all help,
Denny

Why were you doing all this work to it? Did you try iy with no cap on the tank? Don't worry about air in the sediment bowl. What happens when you pull the drain at the bottom of the float chamber?

Yes I tried it without the cap on, either way it just won't keep running , although I can get it to start now without having to shoot starter fluid down the oil bath housing,......as far as draining the float chamber I have not done that as of yet. At this point I'm just trying to figure it out by process of elimination.

Checking flow to the carb by pulling the drain plug is usually considered a very early step when it appears to be not getting gas

Loosen the bolt holding the sediment bowl to the carb. If gas runs out everything upstream must be fine and it's probably a stuck float in the carb.

I've got the same tsx 813 on my 871. Easy carb to rebuild, but they ARE slightly fiddly on the binding float thing. It seems to be a geometry thing where it pivots on the pin. I finally took a die grinder and took a little metal out of the float bowl where it wanted to drag a little bit. I suppose you could also use something for shims on both sides of the float pivot so it can't travel back and forth sideways on the pin as much.

there's 2 "plugs" one is at the bottom of the card, looks like a "bolt, and the other one looks like a T ..........which one is THE drain plug ?..............an thank you for your reply,........

I'm gonna pull the carb off 1st thing this morning,.......thanks for your reply, I'm looking for any and all help as I am NOT a mechanic by any stretch,....I know about enough to get back to the barn before sundown an that's about it !....:)

The 'T" is your main jet adjustment screw. leave it alone for now. The "bolt" is the drain.

I just pulled the carburetor, again, the floats look to be functioning as they should, doesn't seem to be any sticking or hanging up, it moves up & down freely,.....I loosened the sediment bowl before I took the carb off an I had plenty of fuel flow from the tank,.........so,....I'm gonna look at the you tube video for the TSX 813 one more time.......the rebuild kit I got seems to be different than the one in the video, for one thing the large gasket that I got was way shorter then the one I had, so I used the old one again, and there was a very small screen type thing that is in the bottom of the bowl, the guy on the video said MOST people "miss" that one and there was also something about the rod that moves the butterfly dealio..............at THIS point I SHOULDA just bought a new tractor .............I found TWO "mobile mechanics" on Craigslist, one didn't bother to return my call an the other one is on vacation till AUGUST..........so please bare with me ....:)..........

You need to be looking for evidence of the floats rubbing the sides of the carb bowl. Scrape marks on floats or bowl. With carb in hand, you should be able to hear float move when inverting carb. You should be able to open and close needle/seat by holding carb upright or inverted and doing this while blowing into fuel inlet, stop or enable your breath from flowing into carb

Skyskier, where do you ski in the sky? I have skied Telluride but I didn't take the helicopter.

I ride a "Sky-Ski", it's a hydrofoil ya go behind a boat on it,.....one of the 1st "social" hangouts I signed up for was Riverdavesplace.com it's a boating website an I started useing the scree name "Skyskier".......I have a HELLUVA time trying to keep track of usernames & passwords, so,........

Well that looks like a lot of fun! I came across a vid awhile back where some kids were trying and demonstrating a battery powered hydrofoil surfboard kind of thing. I don't think that it went anywhere near as fast as you would go on yours. It was kind of surprising at what a low speed it came up out of the water.
