Ford 860 Oil Leak

Have an 860 Ford tractor that is constantly dripping oil. It is coming from a square metal plate located on the underside just in front of the transmission drain plug. There is a round hole in the middle of the plate and that is where the oil is dripping from.

Would this be an easy fix, or do I need to do more investigating?

Thanks a bunch, Boyd

Are you speaking of the access plate for the hydraulic relief valve? The plate is irregular, not square, held in place with 4 bolts and is aligned with a dowel pin. Removal of the place allows servicing of the hydraulic relief valve.

The plate is sealed with a gasket and the dowel pin has an O-ring on it.

If you remove it, do yourself a BIG favor and go to CNH to order the proper gasket for it. DO NOT use goop.

I believe the plate you are referring to that has a hole in it, should have a cotter key dangling from it also, supposedly to keep it from being plugged with dirt, so that oil, which in your case the transmission seal is leaking, can get to the ground. A split between the transmission and engine will be necessary to replaced the two seals at the transmission.

Had this issue myself, and Wayne is correct--you will have to split the tractor between the transmission and the engine to repair it. However, you need to be certain if it is leaking from the transmission or the engine, as either one could be the issue. Do some investigating after the split before assuming it's on the transmission side; you'll save yourself some heartache/headache if it turns out later it was leaking from the engine side.

You may also find that your clutch has been soaked with oil, which may necessitate a clutch replacement.

Yes, the plate is actually rectangular. After reading the other replies, I won't be removing it right away as the fix is more involved than I want to tackle. Thank You

I believe it is the engine oil that is leaking. Fortunately the clutch seems to be ok. You guys
have convinced me that this repair will need to be done by someone with more experience than myself.
Thanks
